The 3-step SEO Quick Fix (or learn from mistakes which I’ve made!)
OK, I’ll be honest with you – when I first started Nobleword back in 2013, I didn’t know all that much about Search Engine Optimization ‘SEO’.
So, after I’d built my own website, I naively imagined that that would be enough (after all, I now had an online presence, didn’t I?), so I sat back, and waited. And waited. And waited.
When I first googled ‘Copywriter’ and ‘High Wycombe’, there was no mention of my website until page 19……page 19! That’s practically extinct!
The 3-step SEO Quick Fix
1. A professionally-built website will already be SEO-optimised for you
I guess you learn from your mistakes, or at least, you should always learn from your mistakes.
I am not a website designer – that much was clear to me after trying to build my own website the first time round. I’d created an online presence, but not much else. That said, it did make me appreciate what a good website designer brings to the party – for example:
- Search engines need something to index in order to rank it – this means proper use of HTML coding and CSS to create design elements
- URLs (Uniform Resource Locators*) need to be ordered and structured to make it easy for the search engines which crawl websites to rank it more highly.
[Note: The URL for this blog, ‘http://www.nobleword.co.uk/a-tale-of-SEO-mistakes’ has three main components – the protocol identifier ‘http’, the host or domain name; ‘nobleword.co.uk’, and the file name or path; ‘a-tale-of-SEO-mistakes’]
2. Write blogs
Blogs represent unique content….Google loves unique content….therefore blogs boost your ranking massively
Each year, Google changes its search algorithm around 500–600 times. While most of these changes are minor, Google occasionally rolls out a ‘major’ algorithmic update (such as Google Panda and Google Penguin) which affects search results in significant ways.
Or at least that’s my understanding, having initially browsed various technical forums in search of enlightenment.
Then I gave up – life’s too short and I‘m not a computer geek.
So, blog regularly, send out newsletters, link them to various sites (Linkedin, Twitter…etc – still a work in progress for me!) and that alone will lift you far higher up the search engine rankings than any other actions.
I promise.
3. SEO your blogs
Upon reflection, this will a separate blog in its own right – otherwise you’ll be getting information overload at this point (assuming you’ve read this far down already!)
Briefly:
- Use an SEO tool; e.g. Yoast comes with WordPress websites and allows you to alter your copy & tags for SEO optimisation
- Link your blogs – be it interlinked within your own website (see Related Articles below) or linked to external websites
