Eurovision from a true visionary
Eurovision – a brilliantly misconceived attempt to bring the peoples of Europe together on the wings of a song. when all it demonstrates, year after year, is how far apart everyone is. Musically, at least
Don’t worry, this isn’t another post-BREXIT piece, it’s an altogether different take on Eurovision…..although I suppose it should be called Euro-sound if we’re taking things literally.
I won’t make any apologies for channeling the genius of the late, great Terry Wogan, having only just written about him last month when selecting some of his most eloquent phrases.
“A marvellous laser display” he said of Belgian’s 1987 entry “I would have appreciated that a bit more if it hadn’t been for the fella knocking seven bells out of the guitar
Terry was the King of Eurovision, long before Graham Norton adopted the mantle of Court Jester in chief.
Then in Malta 2006, “You’ve got four dancers, for whom modern dance stopped about 30 years ago”
However, in Terry’s hands, the Eurovision become more than just a singing contest – it became a surreal metaphor for life and death.
“Who knows what hellish future lies ahead?”, said Terry Wogan whilst introducing the 2007 contest from Finland. “Actually I do. I’ve seen the rehearsals”
No country was spared Tel’s wit, not even the UK, and we loved him for it….
However, certain other European countries were not quite so enamoured, especially Denmark after he described 2 Danish hosts as ‘Dr Death and the Tooth Fairy’ and was subsequently banned from Denmark. Actually, he probably wasn’t, although he would have enjoyed the controversy.
“That’s the same song the French had been singing since they hung the washing up on the Maginot Line”
Maybe if we could all laugh at each other a bit more across Europe at each other, we would all get on a bit better…..???
