Obituaries: 10 nuggets of wisdom from beyond the grave

Looking back at 2018, as with any other year, we lost a number of famous faces.

However, the legacies of celebrities endures after their death,  in their work, be it audio, visual, or the written word.

And, since this is a website devoted to the written word, what better way to remember those who died in 2018 than through their words…who knows, they may even teach us something?

1. Dream, Work. Love

“One, remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Two, never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it. Three, if you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don’t throw it away.”

– Professor Stephen Hawking

2. A little luck is the best gift of all

“Every time I go to a comic book convention, at least one fan will ask me: ‘What is the greatest superpower of all?’ I always say that luck is the greatest superpower, because if you have good luck then everything goes your way.”

– Stan Lee

3. Stoke your passion

“I sing from the heart. Singing from any other place is worthless.”

– Montserrat Caballé

4. Live your life without regrets

“I can limp with the best of them. The limp is from all the stunts. When they take an X-ray of me, they start calling people in from other offices. My body is all chopped, cut and operated on here and there. I walk with a cane because it hurts like hell without it. Would I give any of it up? Not a chance. Nah, I’d do it again. Everything.”

– Burt Reynolds

5. Conquer your fears

“The years of imprisonment hardened me. I no longer have the emotion of fear. There is no longer anything I can fear. There is nothing the government has not done to me. There isn’t any pain I haven’t known.”

– Winnie Madikizela-Mandela

6. Believe in something

“Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.”

– John McCain

7. Be funny!

“Comedy should never be over-analysed. It’s either funny or it isn’t. There’s a subtle difference between those who say funny things and those who say things funny.”

– Ken Dodd

8. Age disgracefully

“You don’t give a damn about what you say. Other people’s opinions matter less — unless they’re medical.”

– Lady Trumpington

9. Be friendly

“The bottom line is, people want friendliness. They don’t want cleverdicks. No one wants a cleverdick. That’s why I play it the way I do.”

– Dale Winton

10. Patience is a virtue

“The Lord had the wonderful advantage of being able to work alone.”

– Kofi Annan (UN Secretary General)
